Webinar: Leadership in Times of Fear and Uncertainty
Thursday, April 9, 2020. 10:00am – 10:45am PT.
Leaders of midsized companies face an enormous challenge: keeping their teams (and themselves) energized and productive when the light at the end of the tunnel— even the location of the end of the tunnel— is uncertain.
In this webinar, we’ll talk about the challenges and discuss practical approaches to leading in these times. I’ll outline an acronym for our day: VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) and retrace how Bob Johansen, author of How Leaders Make the Future, presented this in 2009 (and reiterated it in 2019). Then we’ll look at three critical leadership competencies for a VUCA future.
- Maker Instinct. A competency and eagerness not just to set the direction as a leader, but to help the team through the process of figuring out how to get there.
- Clarity. The ability to look into the future and gain clarity about what is really going on, and where their company needs to be in the future to win.
- Dilemma Flipping. The ability to turn dilemmas— which unlike problems, can’t be solved— into advantages and opportunities.
While we may touch on leadership tactics required immediately, most of this focus will be on competencies and approaches that will keep your leadership fresh and additive for the remainder of 2020, and years beyond.
